During the previous year, we saw IT security breaches
becoming headline news. An important number of cyber attacks has revealed that
many businesses worldwide have insufficient security measures in place and
especially regarding mobile technology. Mobile security has not received that
much attention so far, but as these kind of attacks become more and more
popular, people and businesses should be ready to take out additional measures
in order to protect their mobile devices especially if they participate in mobile
commerce.
We also saw big companies like JP Morgan and Sony being hit
by serious cyber attacks. Attackers were able to steal thousands of individual
data elements and compromise the services these companies have been using.
According to the Information Security forum, mobile phishing
is becoming more prevalent as a method of compromising mobile devices.
There has already been an increase in the number of fake e-mails
appearing to come from companies like Amazon; the purpose of those e-mails being
to allow attackers to take advantage of customers’ account information.
As forecast mobile commerce will become more heavily
utilised and users should become more security aware with regards to
transactions involving financial information. Consumers should always be alert
to downloading suspicious applications and more importantly about replying to
suspicious e-mails which ask them to divulge sensitive information.
